Committee Member

Chief of Hematology and Oncology
Children’s National Medical Center

Jeffrey Dome is Chief of the Divisions of Hematology and Oncology at Children’s National Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Center. Dr. Dome was recently named the first Thomas Willson and Lenore Williams McKnew Professor of Pediatric Oncology at Children’s National Medical Center. Dr. Dome received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, completed a residency in Pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After fellowship, Dr. Dome was a faculty member at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for nine years, and joined Children’s National Medical Center in 2006. In September 2009, Dr. Dome successfully defended his thesis on high-risk renal tumors and was awarded a PhD degree in Medicine from Erasmus University in Rotterdam.

Dr. Dome specializes in pediatric solid tumors, with an emphasis on pediatric kidney tumors and bone tumors. Dr. Dome is Chair of the Renal Tumor Committee for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and the Study Chair of COG AREN0321, a therapeutic study for high-risk renal tumors. This study features a phase II study of vincristine/irinotecan, based on pre-clinical research that Dr. Dome conducted demonstrating that the camptothecins (topotecan and irinotecan) are active in Wilms tumor. In addition to his clinical research, Dr. Dome has an active laboratory program that studies telomerase expression as a prognostic marker and therapeutic target for pediatric cancer. Because telomerase is relatively specific to cancer cells and is responsible for cancer cell immortality, it represents a highly attractive therapeutic target. Dr. Dome’s laboratory studies have been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, a Children’s Oncology Group Translational Research Award, and by the Children’s Cancer Foundation.
